Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. Perry did not decide to pursue acting as a career after reaching adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse consequences stress can have. Perry was shy in high-school and didn't act. She began acting in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved into New York in search of television roles. She landed small parts on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness brought her back to California to find theater work. Perry starred with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Her father portrayed her in her role on the ABC show Scandal. That same year she appeared as a younger model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role through an audition.
